September is quickly coming to a close – the month has been filled with fun times, great memories, and exciting end-of-summer adventures. But this month has also been filled with hardships for the families affected by hurricane Hermine.

The storm barreled into Georgia on September 2, 2016 as a strong, destructive tropical storm with whipping winds reaching up to 80 miles per hour. This event resulted in the school closing that same Friday. Greenbrier families had to prepare for such a destructive storm; Sophomore Natalie Cook prepared for the storm by, “Stay[ing] inside on the lowest floor of your house. Also, have some supply kits.” She also shared that some things she believes students should keep in such a supply kit would be flashlights, extra food, water, and a first aid kit with an assortment of bandages and ointments.

As well as preparing in advance, individuals should also take additional safety precautions, such as closing any and all doors and windows, keeping a small stash of nonperishable foods, and creating a plan of where to go and what to do before, during, and after a hurricane. Freshman Elizabeth Olig shared, “The streets always chaotic and dangerous, so try not to drive. But if you must, avoid Washington Road if possible.”

Hurricanes are no fun and can be highly dangerous, but following some simple safety procedures can contribute to keeping you and your family safe. Don’t forget to comment down below some additional tips you may have for keeping unharmed during a hurricane like Hermine.
