Hurricane Matthew started ripping through Haiti through October 7-8, 2016, killing almost 900 people before the storm continued to Florida, eventually ending in North Carolina. The hurricane was up to a Category 4 in Florida, but as it progressed it dropped all the way down to category 1 when it hit Charleston, South Carolina.

A lot of people were inclined to evacuate by The Weather Channel and Fox News. More than 450,000 people living in coastal towns left their homes behind. There was tons of traffic, many ran out of gas, and hundreds of hotels were booked full of evacuees. Although their were a lot of warnings to evacuate some decided to stay put to help others who may have been caught in the storm from elsewhere.

Those who couldn’t find a free hotel room stayed with family or even people they didn’t know. Many moved down to stay with family in Georgia, and some people even took strangers into their homes.

Many people at Greenbrier had family stay with them, or maybe someone who they weren’t so familiar with.

“My momma always lets people in with open arms,” says Senior Matthew Ketton.  That wasn’t his first time having strangers stay with them in a time of need.

Hurricane Matthew was a devastating storm.  While it occurred almost a month ago, the aftermath has left a lot of damage and many are in need of help.
